Understanding Shared Meters
What is a Shared Meter?
A shared meter occurs when your electricity meter is incorrectly wired to supply:
- Communal areas (hallways, stairwell lighting)
- Other flats or properties
- Landlord's supply or equipment
- External lighting or security systems
Why This Matters
- You could be paying hundreds of pounds extra per year
- It's illegal for landlords to pass these costs to tenants
- You may be entitled to a refund of overpayments
- Your supplier must investigate if you report it
Common Signs of a Shared Meter
- Unexpectedly high electricity bills
- Usage when you're away from the property
- Meter continues running when main switch is off
- Multiple properties but fewer meters than properties
