Shared Meter Testing Guide

Detect if you're incorrectly paying for electricity used in communal areas or other properties

Step-by-Step Testing Process
Follow these steps carefully to test if your meter is shared

Ensure you have safe access to your consumer unit (fuse box) and electrical meter. Never touch exposed wires or attempt repairs.

Find your electricity meter (usually in a cupboard, under stairs, or outside) and your consumer unit/fuse box (typically mounted on a wall at shoulder height).

Switch off and unplug ALL electrical items in your property including lights, fridge, freezer, boiler, and any standby devices.

With everything off, watch your meter for 2-3 minutes. Digital meters should show no consumption. Dial meters should not move.

Switch off the main switch on your consumer unit. Your entire property should lose power.

With your main switch off, check if the meter is still recording usage. If it is, you are paying for electricity used elsewhere.

Turn your main switch back on and reconnect your appliances. Check everything is working normally.
