Shared Meter Testing Guide

Detect if you're incorrectly paying for electricity used in communal areas or other properties

Understanding Shared Meters

What is a Shared Meter?

A shared meter occurs when your electricity meter is incorrectly wired to supply:

  • Communal areas (hallways, stairwell lighting)
  • Other flats or properties
  • Landlord's supply or equipment
  • External lighting or security systems

Why This Matters

  • You could be paying hundreds of pounds extra per year
  • It's illegal for landlords to pass these costs to tenants
  • You may be entitled to a refund of overpayments
  • Your supplier must investigate if you report it
